June 2011 Mobile Bay Film Scramble – Kick-off Details for Participants

An Exploitation Film is usually a B-movie that has a kind of a scandalous element; a lot of sex; sensational violence; drug use, nudity, freaks, gore, the bizarre, destruction, rebellion, and/or mayhem…it covers taboo subjects. It can be a little gratuitous. “Exploitation” is onlyvery loosely defined, and has more to do with the viewer’s perception of the film than with the film’s actual content. Titillating material and artistic content can and often do coexist. Exploitation films often blur genre lines by containing elements of two or more genres at a time. Here are some useful examples of prominent sub-genres:

Carsploitation/Biker – juvenile delinquents and their hot-rods & motorcycles/scenes of car racing and crashing with sports & muscle cars

Blaxploitation – “minority” overcoming the Man through cunning and violence (see also dykesploitation, hixploitation, mexploitation)

Cannibal – graphic, gory movies focused on cannibalism by remote tribes usually perpetrated against captive westerners

Cautionary – lurid subject matter claiming to be educational, generally about the dangers of premarital sex and/or drug use

Eco-terror – an animal or group of animals are larger and more aggressive than usual, terrorizing humans within a particular locale whilst a group of other humans attempt to hunt it down.

Eschploitation – apocalyptic Christian end-times thrillers

Giallo – slasher films that focus on cruel murders and the subsequent search of detectives for the killers

Martial Arts/Ninja – characterized by extensive fight scenes employing various types of martial arts; stereotypical historically-inaccurate image of the ninja, costume and his arsenal of weapons often including fantasy elements such as ninja magic

Mockbusters – copycat movies that attempt to cash in on the advertising of heavily-promoted major-studio films. examples: Transformers/ Transmorphers, Paranormal Activity/Paranormal Entity, The Day the Earth Stood Still/The Day the Earth Stopped

Nazisploitation – focus on Nazis torturing prisoners at death camps and brothels during World War II. the tortures inflicted are often of a sexual nature; and the prisoners, who are often female, are usually nude.

Nudist – depict a lifestyle unbound by the restrictions of clothing, yet the film itself is restricted by the requirement that genitals not be shown. -frequently involves a criticism of the class system, equating body shame with the upper class, and nudism with social equality.

Nunsploitation – nuns in dangerous or erotic situations

Revenge/Vigilante – a person violates the law to exact justice. It is not unusual for the main character to be a successful, independent woman from the city, who is raped, left for dead by a man or men from the country, she recovers and then subsequently exacts a typically graphic, gory revenge against the person/persons who raped her.

Sexploitation – similar to softcore, in that the film serves largely as a vehicle for showing scenes involving nude or semi-nude women. While many films contain vivid sex scenes, sexploitation shows these scenes more graphically than mainstream films, often overextending the sequences or showing full frontal nudity.

Slasher – a psychopathic killer stalks and kills a sequence of victims in a graphically violent manner. -victims are often teens or young adults.

Spaghetti Westerns – considerably more violent and amoral than typical Hollywood westerns (some films have body counts of over 200) -often deliberately avoid using the conventions of traditional Westerns.

Splatter – horror film that deliberately focuses on graphic portrayals of gore and violence

Stoner – centers around an explicit use of marijuana. Typically, shows marijuana use in a comic and positive fashion. marijuana use is one of the main themes and inspires most of the plot.

Women in Prison – primarily voyeuristic sexual fantasies about prison life that rely on heavy doses of nudity, lesbianism, sexual assault, humiliation, sadism, and rebellion among captive women.

 

 

The Challenge:

Team captains must choose whether to:

1) Create a 3-minute (maximum length) movie trailer for a film of their own devising. Exploitation films rely heavily on sensationalist advertising, as well as broad overstatements of the issues depicted, regardless of how they relate to the intrinsic quality of the film. “Exploitation” has as much to do with the viewer’s perception of the film aswith the film’s actual content. As such, an emphasis on hyperbole is recommended.

2) Create a 7-minute (maximum length) segment of an exploitation film. Examples: the first 7 minutes, the last 7 minutes, or 7 minutes in the middle somewhere, etc.
The challenge is NOT to create a 7-minute movie,
but to only film a section of what is apparently a larger movie. Even though 7 minutes is the maximum length allowed for submissions, shorter length segments are just as welcome.

3) Create both a trailer and a segment. The files must be separate and will be judged separately.

Films are due to be submitted to the Crescent TheaterAbsolutely No Later Than 8pm June 17on data disc or usb drive (no playable dvd’s please)

 

 

The Technical Details:

A 720p, h264-encoded quicktime file (typically in a .mp4 or .mov file) is the ideal format for presentation at the Crescent. Files not provided in this format will be converted into this format, so providing your film in the above format ensures your film will be presented exactly as submitted, and at the highest possible quality.

The Screening:

- Each team that submits an entry by deadline will receive 2 free tickets to their choice of screening.
- Advance tickets are on sale now for $7 and will be available until the day of screening or until sold out. Tickets will cost $10 on day of screening.
- Films will be screened Saturday June 25 at 11am and 11pm at the Crescent Theater.

The Prizes:

- Judging will take place at a private screening in advance of the screening date.
- Prizes are being provided by Rollin’s Deli, Serda’s Coffee Co., Crescent Theater and ModMobilian.com and will be awarded immediately after the 11pm screening
